2019 Winter Stations International Design Competition

2019 Winter Stations International Design Competition

[music plays throughout] Winter Stations are essentially
temporary art installations built in and around the lifeguard chairs
that dot the beach. Part of the idea was to bring little bit
of vibrancy back to the beach and use the lifeguard chairs
as armatures for temporary artwork. Every year,
we have a different theme that we ask the artists to respond to
with their installations. This year’s theme was migration. [Megan] The design that we submitted,
it’s called Ground-Squared. So our installation is connected
to the theme of migration because we’re asking the user to reflect on
our impact on the environment. Because we’re using plastic, it’s kind of this representation
of our throw-away culture. The fact that
it’s affecting climate change in the future will lead to,
like, environmental refugees. And by moving
throughout the space, the user is interacting
with the new ground that we’ve created. It’s kind of our hope
that people will think about this when they’re moving
throughout the space. [James] This design challenge
is different from our regular coursework because it actually shows you
what you have to do in the real world. You’re not working
in a classroom with groups. You’re working with the groups
out in the field. You’re actually trying to solve
a real world problem, and you have a real site. It’s not something theoretical.
It’s literal. [Nicola] This is the first time
I’ve ever done something like this, the competition,
and just, in general, this, like,
from start to finish build. I thought it was really good for me to really understand
and grasp the design concept as a whole. So I thought
that was really unique. [Lily] This experience has bettered me
for my future career because, uh, our team had a bunch of different students
from different programs. We had interior design,
industrial design, and architectural technology. And just working together, it really prepared me for working
with these people in the future. Because in the future,
our firms are gonna be working together, and it’s all about teamwork
and collaboration.
