Altium Designer Tutorial 1 for beginners: Schematic capture and PCB layout – Part1

hi everyone this is my Mouad and welcome
to this new tutorial on how to use Altium Designer for
beginners so for this lisson there will be two parts. the first part in how to make a Schematic file and the second one is how to make the PCB files so the first thing, you have to launch your Altium Desginer from start and Altium Designer here I’ve already did it. first thing I’m going to create a new project, which
gonna be the PCB project, so I click file, new and project, PCB project so here you have your PCB project file I’m gonna save it with customed name, desktop, project1 so I’m gonna choose for example as a name project1, save it. now I’m gonna add a new file right click, add new to project, and schematic here is our schematic I’m gonna save as well Project1 now, let’s make our first circuit which is going to be an easy one which is an RLC circuit we are going to try to draw this circuit, it’s very simple so we will need a Resistor, a capacitor and an inductor. let’s do it. In order to place components you can find them here By clicking libraries you have here different libraries and just by typing the name of component you will find it here different component and the footprint and also you can place components from place and parts or just by clicking the shortcuts P for place and P for part Let’s click on choose we will need the first library : “Miscellaneous devices” and look for the resistor let’s take the RES1 so this is the footprint okay I’m gonna zoom-in the wheel of the mousse click and Rights click, then choose Capacitor okay space tabulation to change the value for example i’m gonna use 10uF I’m gonna place it here right click, choose and then inductor click ok Tabulation and change value to 100mH and place it here right click, choose so last part : is connector gonna choose header 2 okay okay and let’s Press X button inorder to flip our component so next thing to do is to wire different components in order to do that let’s click on place wire here to place wire you have to see the Red Cross and click click resistor to capacitor and capacitor to inductor and inductor to our header so here we did the wiring so as you can see here that our
component didn’t have designator here with a number there are question marks everywhere so in order give them
unique designator, click on Tools and annotate schematic quietly yes so you see here P1, R1, C1… so it was everything for today see you on the next part to see how to
make our PCB. I hope this was useful for you so see you next time

  1. Hello,

I'm new to altium designer, I've installed altium designer 16.
Thank you for the tutorials, it was really helpful. After completing the tutorials,
to start with more complex designs I got one project which contained 3 files of the following format: 1).schdoc 2).pcbdoc 3).ps
I've imported the schematic and pcb files in altium, but in design menu I'm not able to see the update schematc option. Whatever changes I do to the schematic is not changes in pcb and in pcb I'm not able to see import from schematic option also.
So how to synchronize the schematic and pcb so that whatever changes done in schematic are reflected in pcb on imported examples.

    Regards
    Praveen

  3. Nice Tutorial, but I need to install it because I have to realize a project that I need Altium to do it, please can you help me and thanks at all
