Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences

[music] I’m going to be the first generation
college graduate in my family. I started in fine art, I wasn’t sure
about it, and then I talked to one of the advisers here and he told me about
communication designs new media. I’m 28 and I’m going to college for the first
time. I’ve always known I I wanted to do something creative, something that could
kind of maybe one day change the world. I originally didn’t know that this is what
I wanted to study. That was when I really realized I need to do something where my
heart is at. My mother was struggling with some medical issues that took about
five years and I couldn’t really go to school at that time. I’m an architecture
major. I remember building little models when I was about my daughter’s age. It’s
the one thing my mother always wanted was for me to fall in love with
something and really pursue it. I think it’s every little girls dream to follow
their dream. Figuring out all this that I want to do has definitely made me more
confident in myself. We go out and we videotape things and then we edit it, and
then we sit in a room and then we reedit it, and reedit it, and it’s always
hands-on. And I was able to utilize you know computer labs, and a green screen
room was amazing. You can read about the camera all you want but it isn’t until
you apply those, when you’re hands-on and doing it, I think that prepares you for
the real world. I want to be successful and do what I
love to do. And I get to be here and do that with professors who
are there for me all the time and want to help me learn and students who do the
same thing. I feel like everybody wants you to succeed. If there’s a concept that
you don’t understand they’re right there with you helping you draw a straight
line, if need be. Before I came to Northampton Community College, I wish I would
have had something like the Success GPS in order to have some reassurance in what
I wanted to do to make sure I was completely confident with myself. I feel like
NCC is pushing me towards the next step. They really focus in on you as a
student and what your needs are. I can see myself being happy doing this for
the rest of my life.
