Best Budget Lighting Kit for YouTube

Best Budget Lighting Kit for YouTube

– So what is the best budget lighting kit for making YouTube videos? In this video I’m gonna be doing a quick review of this Studio Pro Softbox Kit to see if it lives up to the quality for the budget price. Comin’ up! (Upbeat music) Hey what’s up guys? Sean here with Think Media Bring you the best tips
and tools for building your influence with online video. And in this channel, we do
tips and strategy videos, as well as tech gear
reviews, just like this one. So if you’re new here,
consider subscribing. And hey, at any point during the video, check out the show notes and
links in the description below. I’ll list out all of the gear
that we used for this video, as well as the specs of this lighting kit, and anything else I forgot. Lets, jump into the review. So one of the best ways to
level up your video quality, is to level up your lighting. You know, a lot of times people think that they need to buy a new camera when a lot of times, what they really should be
investing in is lighting. However, sometimes
lighting can be expensive. Like a lot of times, the
lighting kit that we use here on Think Media comes in at around $500. So the question is, is it possible to get really good lighting that gets you great results in your videos without breaking the bank? And the good news is, the answer is absolutely yes! And I really believe that that’s proved by this lighting kit from StudioPro. Now this particular lighting kit where you get these two soft boxes, everything you need, a
case, comes in at $75, here in the U.S. right now. And of course you can check
links in the description, for the most current prices. But that is pretty astounding, as far as the amount of dollars. But now the question is, is it live up to the quality standards? Now, the first thing to note, is that this lighting kit is 850 watts. And so it’s actually
a little bit brighter, than some of the most
budget kits on Amazon. One of the first things
you should be looking for when picking out a lighting kit is does it have enough brightness for you? And at 850 watts, this
kit has been working great as we’ve been shooting videos
over here in the office. And actually if you look at
what video looks like that we just shot off of this
lighting kit, again $75, and compare it with this video clip from a $500 lighting kit. I would pretty much argue
when we were comparing that, a lot of times, you wouldn’t
be able to tell the difference. Like you can’t really them apart. And so you can really see that, this lighting kit can produce
some great, great results. So what is included in this kit? Well, lets break it down. The first thing is you
get two 85 watt bulbs, and again, they’re CFL bulbs which is nice because that means low power consumption. They’re not going to blow
breakers in your house, or your office, or wherever you shoot. And they’re also low heat. I’ve shot with a lot of
older school lighting kits, and they can make you sweat, you know, especially if you’re maybe doing
lifestyle or beauty videos. You don’t want extra heat on your face, these are great because
they don’t get hot at all. What’s also nice is that
these are rated to last up to five years if you were
using them four hours a day. So basically, you’re probably
not going to be replacing the bulbs any time soon, if ever, depending on your usage. Additionally, these bulbs are CRI-90 which is the color rendering index, which simply means, the higher the number, the better it will reproduce color. So this is important if you
just want good skin tones, but also if you were
doing any kind of content where you want vibrant colors or maybe you’re showing
off color products, especially beauty or lifestyle, and you want those colors to be reproduced on video accurately. You want to make sure
you get quality bulbs. And again that’s why maybe you could find a few kits on
Amazon that are cheaper, but I would argue that
they’re not as good, right? That they’re gonna compromise
a lot of the parts. And what’s nice about this kit is that the StudioPro doesn’t
really compromise anything. And then, these softboxes, of course, come with these diffusers that you can put on the front here. And what’s great about that, is again, it’s very
flattering for skin tones. You know, this is the kit that we shoot with a lot of the time. It’s these bi-color
StudioPro lights as well. We actually did a full video
review of these as well, we’ll link it up on the YouTube card if you want to see it. I love the kit, and it
has a lot of pros to it, but usually because it
doesn’t have a soft box, it’s got diffusers, it’s not quite as good on your skin. And they actually make
a soft box kit for that, but then it takes it over $500. And so again, when you use
this with the diffusion, you’re getting a nice soft light. It’s gonna remove harsh
shadows, and just give you a very pleasant lighting experience that will look great on video. And then what I also love about this kit, is it’s really fast and easy to set up. So it comes with a couple stands, that come up to seven foot six inches and the build quality on those is great, those set up really fast. And then the soft boxes
just pop into place. Some of them require you to
actually install the bars in them, and it goes a
little slow to assemble them. These just pop right
in, screw the bulb in, and you’re good to go, literally, in a matter of moments. And then once it’s all
fired up, all you have to do is just flip the switch,
and the light is on, and you’re ready to shoot your videos. And then finally, included in the box is a nice carrying case that’s padded. So if you want to break
the lighting kit down and take it with you
somewhere for a shoot, you can absolutely do that. And so as far as my final thoughts go, I think that this StudioPro 850 watt kit is absolutely one of the top contenders for the best budget lighting kits for creating any kind of videos, and especially YouTube videos. Easy to set up, dependable
components, well put together, well thought out, low heat. You know, has great results on video. I really think you can’t go wrong here if you want level up your
lighting, level up your videos, without spending too much money. Question of the Day! What do you think about

  1. Just so you know, the first link in the video description gives me an error message on Amazon saying page not found.

  2. Hi there! I'm shooting videos in my bedroom and they come up with pretty bad lighting. Since I have an old JVC camera I thought this is as good as it gets, But then I shoot some scenes in the garden and they look great, so it's definately a matter of light. My question here is, what should I go for, softbox or light ring? I'm making videos standing about seven feet away from the camera, with a white wall on my back. Any advice will be apreciated. Thanks!

  3. Wow, this sounds like a pretty sweet deal. I am currently using what is probably the lousiest lighting ever, three desk lamps with daylight saving bulbs. 💡

  4. Great review! We desperately need to improve our lighting situation on our channel and this review really helps.

  5. Hello Sean, my name is Brock & I have been watching your YouTube Channel for a little while now & I just love the advice that you give & that it's so easy to understand.
I do have a question though. Since it's been a while since you made this video, I can't seem to find the StudioPRO 850W on anymore. So what I want to know is, can you recommend a Softbox like the StudioPRO 850W, something that is either easy to put together or like the StudioPRO 850W I can just open? I was born with Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus & I need a Softbox that I can open & close pretty easy.
Any help you can give me would be great, thank you.

  6. I just searched "Good youtube Lighting" clicked on this video and after watching I literally see no reason to look at anything else. Great video. You got my subscription.

  7. Sean, you rock! Thank you for your excellent and impeccable videos, and for explaining all the tech in a simple and Professional way. I would like to get those lights, but meanwhile, I will work with the ones I have, and make the most of it! Cheers! xoxo

  8. You seem like you have a nice clean productive non-controversial YouTube channel… I assume this is the kind of channel YouTube likes and hopefully you don't get any strikes or threats from YouTube to shut you down… Right?
I'm just thinking that when I eventually open up a YouTube I would like to do something that is not going to give me trouble of getting shut down and your type of Channel seems to be very good informative and not too problematic… Thanks for the great videos… They're very informative

  9. Awesome Sean, thank you for your tips and tricks for the lighting, I saw this kit on amazon and truly within my budget.

  10. 1:20 he says yes but his bodylanguage says no. (He's shaking his head like you do when you say "no") What should I believe no? – J

  11. Right now I don't have any lighting .. My husband came across this product on Amazon. You really can't beat the price so far all the reviews are awesome. So I will be getting this set … Can't wait. It should help so much with my cooking & dehydrating videos.. Thank you for sharing.. :")

  12. 1 year later and the price has gone up to $100 RIP… Which is probably still a good deal considering what you get.

  13. Thanks for the info. It has been a while since I had to buy lights. I remember when you had to rent the 3 point lighting kits and so forth with the softboxes a hot tota.

  14. Does anyone make elastic diffusers that you can slap over fluorescent lighting? I'm trying to record blacksmithing videos in a workshop that is full of over head lighting and would love to be able to scatter that light as well as us a softbox lighting kit. I'm totally new at this and it seems like a good idea to me.

  15. A really useful review of this SutdioPro lighting kit. Right now, I had been relying on daylight. Time to get one of these. Thanks Sean for this information.

  16. On another video about kit you suggested buying Prismatic Halo ring light. Why would it make more sense to buy this over the kit you reviewed above? Ta.

  17. Thank you so much for your excellent videos, you are doing a great job and I can really see that you are sincere and passionate about genuinely helping us. You are a real inspiration.

  19. Sean I hope you see this ! i enjoyed this video but was wondering if i upgraded to this version with the boom light is this better or at least equivalent

  20. I know this is a year old video, maybe you’ll respond. Saw the video, wanted to buy the kit but it’s gone from amazon now. What would you recommend in this same price point?

  21. I'm not using any lighting gear at the moment, but it does limit me to shooting only in the daytime. Thanks for posting this review!

  22. I am on the look out for some new lights for my YouTube videos! I made the mistake of getting umbrella lights! My lighting looks okay but I want to switch to soft boxes!! Thanks for the tips!

  23. @Think Media, I have a question! What's the difference between LED lights and softbox lights? I've watched your other lighting videos to try to understand. It seems that LED lights are more portable and the cheaper option. I'm leaning more towards the softbox lights because it seems to have better diffusion. Are those assumptions correct?

2nd question if you see this comment- You recommend 2 softbox light brands over your videos. One is Fovitec Studio Pro and the other is LimoStudio. From Amazon reviews, it seems like LimoStudio has been around longer. Do you have a 2019 pick for softbox lighting? Thank you!

  24. Thank you for this! It was helpful! Question- is there a way for me to get warmer tones with the soft box? Can I put yellow lights in it?

  25. It sounds great for an indoor space where you have good power source, but would you use in outdoor low light settings. I'm working out of my garage with a small hand light source focused on the work. During the day lighting is poor to ok, but at night it's almost impossible to shoot good video.

  26. hahaha OFCOURSE u can see the difference! omg the cheaper light make u look cheap too:)) so harsh on ur face

  27. I'm currently using 2 shop lights for lighting my videos. They were only $12 and made a big difference in the quality and consistency of my videos. I just need to find a solution to diffuse it some as shadows are a bit harsh at the moment.

  28. Great info. I am definitely willing to try and get better lighting. Most of my stuff is kinda close up stuff. I am showing ppl how to fix stuff. Do you think this lighting will work for me?

  29. Question. Do the defusers in the StudioPRO kit reduce (or even eliminate) glare or reflections? In my case, I have some posters in poster frames directly behind me and the lighting I currently have causes glare and thus, you can't even see the posters. =/ So yeah, do those defusers help with that?

  30. Just found this….
Do you have newer recommendations for home GoPro shooting?

I purchased all of my equipment with your amazing reviews… I LOVE YOUUUUUUUU SOOOO MUCHHHH!!!!!!

  33. Can anyone tell me if these are good for mid-range shots too? Or only close ups? I usually do things about 5-7 feet from the camera. Thanks!

  34. Booked, thanks for the video Sean! My goal with Youtube is to empower, support, and celebrate dads. These videos help me create the most professional content possible. thanks!

  35. Sean! Love your videos and they are super helpful when it comes to building my own channel. I started using the softbox set from MountDog which was only $60, a huge money saver and works great so I recommend that for others!

  36. I make gaming videos, i have no camera yet so no lighting. But i orderd a logitech c270, and i think i will get a cheap ring light 😀

  37. The lights seemed to have changed. its now Fovitec – 1x 20"x20" Photography & Video EZ Setup Softbox Studio Video Photography Lights w/ 1000 Watt Equivalent Total Output $100

  38. I'm definitely going to try these out…at the moment I'm depending on natural lighting 🙈 thanks for this video, very helpful 👌

  39. Great video! I am wondering what your opinion is on the Neewer 2 Packs 660 LED Video Light and Stand Photography Lighting Kit? Any input on these lights from anyone would be much appreciated.

  40. Thank you for this video. As a newbie and starting to get my lighting and camera situation together, I am taking your advice. Going to purchase this kit.
