Canva Design Tutorial: Strong Layout Design

Hello and welcome to our fourth tutorial
on layout design. Today we’re going to go through five rules
for strong layout design I hope you enjoy this tutorial and as
always if you would like to try this tutorial at home, jump onto a desktop computer. A strong layout begins with the grid. You can see over here there’s a 3 x 3 grid. That is this three rows and three
columns So what I’m going to do is fill up this 2 x 2 grids with images of my favorite food. I’m
going to come up here and search for chocolate dessert. Find the images that I like and drag them into the photo holders. That is all that is required for this challenge. Grids give my design a
nice structure. When you’re getting started with design, one
of the best things that you can do is use a grid as your base. So you can see here on the left that I’ve used a 2 x 2 grid. I’ve got the photo in the left column and then I’ve got a text box in the right. So for this challenge all we have to do is
align the photo and the text. You can see that there’s these little dotted lines appear which shows if the image is being correctly aligned. Half the fun of design is thinking outside the box. You don’t have to use a rectangular placeholders to
design using a grid. You can see in this example we have used
a 2 x 2 grid. That is that there are two rows and two columns. I’ve placed an image in the left column and then a circle frame in the top right
followed by some texts. For this exercise all we have to do is search for frame find one that we like, drag it onto the
page resize it and move it into position. I’m then going to search for a rose again find one that I like and then drag it into the photo holder. And that’s it for this challenge. Now it’s time to get a little more
creative with our grid. So you can see here in the left, I’ve used a 3 x 3 grid. An image takes up 2/3 of my
design using the sections on the left. For this exercise all we have to do
is search for a sandy beach using the search bar, find the image we like and then drag it into the photo holder. I can crop the image by double clicking and then clicking the tick to confirm. You can see by using the 3 x 3 grid opens up a lot of possibilities but gives you some nice structure to work from. In this final challenge, we want you to break the rules by putting one element outside your grid. You can see here that I’ve used a 3 x 3 grid but I’ve placed one element outside breaking the structure of the grid. So let me demonstrate over here. I’m going to search for an icon find one that I like, drag it on to my
page resize it and then move it into position. You can see that I have positioned it so
sits outside my grid. So there are our five tips for strong layout design. I hope you enjoy applying these concepts to your own designs and as always if you would like to share us
any of your designs, please do so on Facebook or Twitter using our name, Canva. Happy designing!
