Cleveland Institute of Art: Interior Architecture

We take these kids
who come in here with amazing artistic
ability and visual skills and we honed them
into designers. We took the approach that we’re
going to train our students and educate them to be problem
solving designers working in a commercial based
field, from restaurants, to retail spaces, trade
shows, museum pieces, even some building design. We take those basic skill
sets, drafting, line weights, what’s a floor plan, what’s an
elevation, what’s a perspective drawing, basic perspective. As they move from semester
to semester everything starts advancing. We pretty quickly
start to move them toward some of
the digital tools. They usually wind up working on
what’s called a Wacom cintiq. The students literally will
draw on the computer screen. We’re constantly
working with students on an individual basis. This sort of constant
input and interaction makes for a real healthy
learning environment. By the time they
graduate as seniors, they’ve done a
multitude of projects with faculty and
with professionals, and then they’ll go into their
senior thesis work, which is all driven by their ideas. We work with firms
where they come in and they actually help
us teach the students. They actually host projects,
sit-in our critiques, and give real feedback. Our placement rate
is at about 95%. They’re working in
really amazing careers, the design agencies,
the consultancies all across the country. What I enjoy the
most out of teaching is seeing where
our graduates go.
