Often times, business owners hire a commercial
interior design firms without knowing what to expect, what the role of the interior designer
is, or how to work with an interior designer. I’d like to go over the three biggest mistakes
that business owners make even before hiring an interior designer so that next time you’re
interested in hiring one for your business, hopefully from Zachos Design Group, everyone
is prepared ahead of time so that the process is seamless and the result exceeds expectations. The
first mistake is functionality and design. The biggest mistakes business owners make
is not determining the functionality of their space. For corporate spaces, the most important
element is making the proper selections on storage pieces. What does each employee need
to maximize their time at work and for them to produce their best results? Talk to your
team! Find out! When employees are involved everyone is happier. For my hospitality clients,
it’s important to realize that every detail matters. This is not only in the design of
the space but also in product packaging, take-away items such as to-go bags, signage, everything
from the time someone walks in to when they walk out. This attention to detail gives your
customers the opportunity to experience your space while they’re in it and also when they
are at home using whatever product they may have purchased or item that they were given
to take. A person can go to a nice café and eat lunch, then get their iced tea to-go.
Now imagine you’re the only cafe in town that has all red packaging and your to-go cup is
all red, with a red straw, and your logo? There’s no doubt that person is going to remember
your cafe over the competition, and they’ll come back for another iced tea to-go simply
to get another red cup. Putting design and thought into every detail is key. The second
biggest mistake is space and furniture planning. There have been many times that a client of
mine will fall in love with a piece of furniture and purchase it before they hire me only to
find that the piece of furniture isn’t the right fit, either aesthetically or functionally
or in size, or all of the above! They then have to call a Commercial Interior Designer
to fix it. To avoid a potential waste of time and money, first determine with a professional
designer the piece’s relationship with the rest of the room in order to achieve the best
and most efficient end result. The third is thinking that more is more in design and accessories.
It’s like Coco Chanel said, ‘When accessorizing, always take off the last thing you put on.’
Interior design is not too far from fashion in that way of thinking. Simplicity is always
best! So many times I walk into corporate offices and the desks are full of clutter
and paper, the patterns on walls and carpets and chairs are competing against each other,
or there are random knick knacks on shelves and waiting tables. Nothing is cohesive or
clean. Definitely not the first impression a potential client wants to see! The key is
to once again determine storage solutions that work for the space as well as each particular
person in the office, and to work with an Interior Designer to create the vision for
the space. Mixing patterns can look sharp when done correctly; or maybe your space is
small and needs to create the illusion of being bigger. Whatever the challenge, Zachos
Design Group can help.
