Connected by design

I started pursuing art as more than just a
hobby in the last year or so I think. I have always seen people really putting themselves
out there, really sharing their work with other people and for me it was always just
like a hobby that I kind of kept to myself and I did it for myself. So one day I thought why not share some of
the things that I do with other people and see what kind of reaction I get. Art to me is I think it’s a big part of
my own life but I think it’s a big part of life for people in general and I think
we consume art in so many different forms whether its music or film or visual art. I think not only is it a tool for kind of
creative expression but it’s also the way that we connect with other people. Architecture wasn’t something that I always
knew that I wanted to pursue, growing up my parents were interior designers so I always
grew up around them designing things or making things, go from like a drawing to like a real
like physical space. So I was also part of an arts program in high
school, so learning a lot of traditional painting techniques and doing a lot of drawing for
myself so I guess when it came time for university it was kind of like the combination of the
two so like doing something related to art and design but also something that kind of
made a real impact on the physical world as well. Originally my thesis was looking at doomsday
prepping and kind of like apocalyptic shelters but then I decided to pivot towards looking
at urban loneliness and how to mitigate urban loneliness through design because I felt like
I wanted to concentrate on some real world population level problems and I felt like
this was one that really needed or could use an architectural perspective because I think
a lot of the urban loneliness comes from the way that our cities have been constructed. After re-introducing kind of doing artwork
back into my life the most rewarding part has been having these totally self-governed
project where I have like total control of every aspect of the projects which is super
different from school or work and I think it was born out of kind of like my own hobby
but also kind of a way that I could use my own abilities to maybe make some money on
the side or yeah just express myself creatively.”
