Day in the Husker Life | Lindsay | College of Architecture

(upbeat music) Hey guys, I’m Lindsay, third year interior design student from Sabetha, Kansas and welcome to my life. I usually start my day by grabbing a quick breakfast at the dining hall. Cather is definitely one of my favorite places to grab lunch. One of my favorite parts about living on campus is being close to everything. It is the oldest dorm on campus and it’s just very homey, which is why I really enjoy living there and it also means that I’m a short walk from everywhere I need to go during the day, which is really nice. So this morning I’m actually going to be studying in my floor lounge, which has a nice big round table in it so I can spread out all my stuff and work on my studio project. So now I am in what we call Harry Potter Hallway. It’s a little bit Harry Potter-esque and it’s another great place to study during the day because we can see into our courtyard, which is only accessible by going through Neihardt. I just spent the morning working on my boards and just sent them off to print. So now is gonna be a good time to grab some lunch. Can I have spinach, tomatoes, and olives? (upbeat music) There you go. So I just grabbed some lunch at Husker Heroes, one of my favorite little lunch places on campus and now I’m headed across campus to the College of Architecture to pick up my prints and meet my professor. I love walking across campus, especially this time of year because there’s so much going on. I love this side of campus because the Sheldon is here and also the Lied Center and the School of Music and the Architecture Hall are all right close together. This is Architecture Hall. It’s where I spend a large majority of my time. A lot of my classes are here. (upbeat music) This is my friend Anna. What are you doing, Anna? I am laser cutting for a model for our final studio project. So this is where I have studio. So what’s interesting about my studio is that it’s two levels. So I set on this level, but some of classmates sit down there on that level usually. Studio class is not really a lecture. We more just work on our projects and get feedback from our professors and also from each other. So I just pinned up and now I’m waiting for my professor to come so she can redline my work. I’m wondering if these in general just need to get slightly larger in font size. Should I keep like this line work in there or pull it out? And it may be even be in that way and it can be a wayfinding mechanism. Investigate that. So think about that. That’s one thing, like how we get in. Not fat line. So I could have the furniture in here and called out in here. Yes. So right now I am headed to Gomez Art Supply to pick up some stuff for my graphic design class. So here is Gomez. It’s honestly one of my favorite places in the whole wide world. We are back in studio. Let’s have a look at my Gomez goodies. A bone folder for binding books. It likes creases the paper so you get a nice straight fold. And also in here are some screw posts for book binding as well. Right now I am standing in our material lab in the College of Architecture. We change out the material display fairly often so a lot of times you can come in and see something new that you haven’t seen before. So these are some materials that I pulled for a project I’m currently working on. There’s carpet, wood flooring, and then some upholsteries. This is actually for acoustical purposes and the felt is as well. Right now, I am taking a graphic design studio in addition to my interior design studio and I’ve really enjoyed it because it’s allowed me to combine my knowledge of interior design and graphic design. So one project that I’ve been working on this semester is a brand book actually for an interior design organization. One of the things that I really love about our college is The Link. So this is The Link. It connects the old College of Law to the old University library. And sometimes we even play basketball. We put a basketball goal right there and play basketball here in The Link as well. So in my welding class, we have been learning all about metal working. So we learned how to use a torch a few weeks ago and recently we’ve been learning about mig welding. So I have been doing a little practicing and this is what it’s looking like so far. So it basically gives us an opportunity to be able to talk to actual people who are tradesmen in the field and know what we’re talking about when we speak with them. Check it out. Not half bad for an amateur, huh? After a busy day, I am back in Neihardt and ready to wrap up a few last homework things before I head off to bed. I am so glad you guys came along for the day. I hope you got to see a little taste of what it’s like to be an interior design student here at the University of Nebraska. If I could say one thing about the college, it would be that it’s a place of community where I know so many people and they’re always willing to help you with anything that comes along and make you a better designer and a better person.
