For the college student, setting
up that first off-campus apartment can be overwhelming.
On today’s show, we’ll give you some fast and affordable
solutions that are perfect on a college budget.
We’ll also help you get a handle on those dreaded college cell
phone bills. When valuables are stolen at
school, most of the time they’re never recovered.
We’ll show you how to prevent theft with a lock that’s secure
and easy to use. Moving in and out of a college
dorm is difficult on everyone. We’ve got solutions that are
guaranteed to take the stress and strain out of moving day.
This is Designing Spaces: College Special.
(music). I’m in my third year in college,
so I’ve definitely spent a lot of time in the dorms.
I’m renting an apartment off-campus for the first time,
so I’m really excited to be living the way I want to live.
The only problem is furniture. I don’t know where to get it.
The cost of setting up a new apartment away from home can be
costly. With the rental option open, Kid
Spaces stepped in to help one college student with the
services provide by Cort Furniture Rental.
I’m meeting with Allison and I’m hoping she can give me some
advice. It’s always fun when we can help
a student make her first off-campus apartment feel like
home. Spending 1000’s of dollars on
new furniture is not often times in a student’s budget.
No. Renting furniture makes sense
because if gives you that flexibility, and it’s also
highly affordable. I live 200 miles away, so having
someone help me out would be great.
Well, you should just let our guys just show up to your new
apartment, and place the furniture, so it’s there when
you arrive. So it’s time to get Catherine
into the showroom to take a look at all of the different options
she has, and we found some really great solutions for her,
so I can’t wait to see it all in place.
I’m actually looking for a dining room table.
What do you think about this one?
This one might be a little too big for me.
I mean I might be looking for something smaller.
I don’t have a lot of space in my apartment.
There’s a glass table that won’t really fit in her space, but we
ended up finding a perfect table for her space that she’ll really
like. Oh yeah, I really like that a
lot. It’s the perfect size.
Yeah, I like this a lot. Yeah?
This would be perfect for me, I think.
(record scratch sound). But it comes with these green
chairs, that I’m not crazy about.
Would I be able to swap these out?
What are you looking for? Maybe something a little bit
more vibrant, you know, but I do see over in the corner, this
bright yellow chair and it’s perfect for my style, so I take
those chairs and match them up with this little wooden table
and it is perfect for my dining room.
See this is great. I definitely want something that
has a lot of color. Then we’re looking around for
living room furniture. This is really important to
Catherine. Can you imagine this in your
off-campus apartment? This is great.
I love it. It’s got plenty of space, lots
of different ways to stretch and hang out.
Allison shows me this sectional couch that is perfect for my
budget, perfect for my style. It’s convertible, so I can move
it around a little bit, so that’s perfect for what I’m
looking for. This ottoman can also serve as
additional seating, too. So, you can take this off, and
if you need to put seating around the room, you can use
that as well. It comes with an ottoman and a
nice chair, and some really cute pillows, so all around it’s
definitely what I’m looking for. So now all we need is your
bedroom set. Right.
We should go look online and see what’s available.
Great idea. We can also look for accessory
pieces like wall art, electronics, bedding packages
and kitchen wares. Perfect.
Let’s go take a look. Awesome.
(music). I think this one might be a
perfect selection for an off-campus apartment.
I like that a lot. Allison is showing me some bed
sets online, and we found the perfect one for me.
It was perfect in color, perfect in size and I really like it.
You can always go onto Cort.com and find all the selections
there as well. That’s great.
Our professionally trained delivery team will set up the
furniture, and she doesn’t even have to be there when they’re
doing it. I can’t wait to see her
Okay, go check it out. Oh it looks so great.
Awesome. Doesn’t it look great?
I love it. Yeah, the Cort trained delivery
team set it all up for you. When I walked into my apartment
for the first time, it looked awesome.
I’m really surprised that I can afford stuff that looks so nice.
So you went through the online ordering process.
I did. I ordered online.
It was really easy. It only took a few minutes.
That’s great. Well, I think you made some
really good choices in here. Well, are you going to live here
with a roommate? Nope, it’s just me.
Well, if you change your mind, we can add another complete
bedroom package for just $55 a month, that way you can split
the cost of all of this, making living off-campus even more
affordable. I don’t have a roommate right
now, but I was thinking about getting one next year.
To know that it’s only $55 to add additional bedroom furniture
would save the cost for me and my roommate, so it’s definitely
a good decision. I’m so happy that Catherine’s
pleased with her new apartment home.
I think it looks great and she did a really good job picking
out all of the furniture. Cort wants to make it easy and
affordable for lots of people t rent furniture, whether it’s a
business traveller setting up an apartment away from home, or a
student living off campus, or a family that needs to move into a
temporary home. Wow, I’m really excited to
finally have my own apartment, but I have one last question.
Yeah, you bet. When the semester’s over, how do
I return everything? Oh it’s really easy.
Just give us a call and we’ll have our driver’s come by and
pick the furniture back up. We’ll make moving out just as
simple. That’s awesome.
Well, welcome home. For more information, visit:

Sending a kid off to college is not only a little scary for the
student, the cost can be very scary for the parents.
It becomes essential to look at every aspect of college life,
and find ways to reduce cost, especially when operating on a
tight budget. She’s coming home from college
today for a visit. Hey, what are you guys doing
tonight? She may be away at school, but
she’s still my little girl. Just visiting with my parents.
Okay, cool. You know all that stuff they say
about protective dads and their daughters?
That’s me. But, money is a little tight
these days, and the bills keep adding up, including the cell
phone. We have to find a way to reduce
her bills, but I don’t want her to lose the ability to call me
at anytime. The catch is, she loves her
phone, and she wants to keep it. We just need a new plan.
I’m looking for quality service, but on a budget.
I’m home! Hi!
Hello Dad. To help this dad and his
daughter find quality cell service that fits their budget,
we’ve called back our friend Suzy Taylor, who has a handle on
phones and cellular service, to explain what would work ideally
for a college student on a budget.
Suzy, so good to have you back. Debbie, it is so nice to be
back, and you know what, I am sure I have just the solution
for him. Sure you do.
This daddy wants to be close to his daughter.
Who can blame him for that? So, what he’s going to need is,
he’s going to need good service, and he wants it, from what I
hear, on a budget. Yes.
I’m getting the understanding that he needs to make sure that
budget doesn’t start to escalate.
Yes, this is true. All to often, consumers find
themselves paying for all kinds of hidden charges, and then
they’re stuck because of their contract with a service
provider, so here’s a question. Is there a cellular service that
is inexpensive, requires no contract, and provides quality
service? Is it possible?
Is there something out there? Yes.
Net10 Wireless. Net10 Wireless.
Okay, so how do they provide the savings?
Okay, well, what’s really amazing is that they provide the
service, and the phones on any of the four major networks, but
unlike the big carriers, you know who they are, they don’t
have to pay for the big towers, so they’re going to pass those
savings on to their customers. So, Net10 doesn’t have to pay
for those towers, in other words.
No, they don’t, and so the savings goes to the customers,
reducing the cost, and what’s great is they get the same
cellular coverage, so they can use the latest phones, like the
iphone 6 and have everything they’ve already had.
Okay, so that sounds good. You get to keep your phones.
Alright, so what are the plans like?
Well, first of all, they offer no-contract plans.
No-contract plans. Okay, so can you explain that
and how it can save us money? Sure.
No contract 30-day plans. They start at $35 for unlimited
talk and text, with 500 mb of data, and are only $50 for 3gb
of data. And, there are more ways to
save. With the range of family plans
available, dad can monitor costs month by month and you aren’t
locked in. Nice.
And you can even set up auto-refill to save money.
Wow, that is really really good. So, what if someone wants to
keep their existing phone, though?
Like this dad and his daughter. Is this possible with the plans
you’re describing? Yes.
Net10 Bring Your Own Phone plan, it allows you to keep your
phone, keep your network, and take advantage of the new 5gb 4G
LTE data plan for $50. Wow, that is incredible.
So, how difficult is it for the average consumer?
It’s actually not that difficult at all, Debbie.
No? No, while I’m sitting here, I’m
going to show you. Okay.
Simply, remove the old sim card, take it out, and then I’m going
to put in my brand new Net10 Wireless sim, super simple, like
that. That’s it.
That’s it. It just pops out, and pops in.
And you just put the battery in, and you’re good to go.
I am good to go. There you go.
Now, what about all our contacts?
Will they transfer over? As long as you save them in your
phone, you’re not going to lose your contacts, or your
information. Nothing is lost.
Okay, so here is a question. I have had the same phone number
for years! Me too!
I don’t even remember when I had ever changed it, so can I keep
that some number. Yeah, absolutely.
With Net10 Wireless, you can absolutely keep your phone
number, but if you want a new number, you can also do that so
the choice is yours. Okay, you have that option.
Yep. So what else do our viewers need
to know about using their own phone?
Well, first you need to make sure your phone is unlocked.
Okay, I’ve heard that saying “unlocked” but what does that
mean? I don’t know what that means.
After your two-year contract is up with your current carrier,
you actually own your phone. Really.
So you need to contact your carrier and they will give you
this unlock code, which means you’ll be able to use your phone
on any wireless provider, like Net10.
Okay. And then next, you’re just going
to check to make sure that your phone is compatible by just
texting NTBYOP to 82888. That’s it.
That sounds simple enough. I could do that.
Yeah, and or a new tech savvy college student, it’s a
no-brainer. Oh, they’ll get it right away.
So, where can our viewers sign up?
Oh Net10Wireless.com to learn more.
Net10 is available in over 100,000 retail stores, locations
nationwide, Wal-mart, Target, Best Buy, Family Dollar, Dollar
General. Pretty much where we are
Every day. You know, I think this is the
perfect solution for this dad and his daughter.
Yeah, with Net10, what they have to offer, the phone issues are
under control with this dad. Unfortunately, the other college
expenses… Yeah, I don’t know about those.
We wish them luck with them. Yes we do.
Well, Suzy thanks so much for being here.
Really appreciate it. No problem.
Okay. Well, to go to our website, just
visit DesigningSpaces.tv and we’ll show you this portion of
the show again, and we’ll also have a link to the Net10
Wireless website for more information.
We have so much more coming up, so don’t go away.
(music). Meet Tyler.
His school day came to an end and he can’t get out of there
fast enough. It’s Friday, but when he
realizes he’s forgotten some of his most
important possessions, it means going back to the locker to
retrieve them, as long as he can remember that all important
combination. These days, with kids in school
and their school lockers, they keeps thousands of dollars worth
of stuff in there, and a lot of times they don’t lock it up.
Using a padlock, a combination lock, is as easy as ABC.
Famous for his lip sync youtube Shake It Off video, which has
garnered over 34 million views, Officer Jeffrey Davis has all
too often seen what can happen. Kids these days use social media
for a lot of the wrong things, and kids need to realize that
before they hit send on any of their social media outlets, they
need to be very aware of what they’re doing.
You don’t want to post things that you can never get back,
such as that your parents or you’re away on vacation.
People can look at it and know that you’re not home.
Well, in our profession, we see it all the time.
We respond to these things where kids put their stuff in a
locker, they don’t lock it up, they go in, especially in the
gym, they go to gym, people come in, they try all the lockers.
They try the one without the lock and they get all the great
stuff out of there. Well, you know what, it could
have all been prevented by using a lock.
Remember your old padlock from school?
One turn to the left to whatever number, and then one turn back.
Or was it three turns past zero, and then one turn back?
However, research studies show that words are easier to
remember then numbers. Word Lock is the originator and
innovator of word combination locks.
Tyler’s locker is secured with a Word Lock 5-dial padlock
representative of a new trend in padlocks.
You can choose your own word combination, a combination that
is easy to remember. That’s all there is to it.
Well, who hasn’t had locker anxiety?
I had locker anxiety when I was a kid.
You go to your locker, you’re trying to get to your next
class, and you’re trying to remember this random number in
your head. You can’t remember it.
If you had a lock that used words, it would be so much
easier for you to use. You can use words, easy words
such as NFL, LOL, or COP, like myself.
Tyler uses a U-Luck on his bike at school.
When out with his friends he uses a loop and lock, so all the
bikes are secured together. By having both styles, he knows
he can secure his bike in different situations.
Well, locking up your bike is so easy, and so important.
I tell you in my profession, we see bikes stolen on a daily
basis, and all you gotta do is remember, if you’re stopping
even for a quick second, bikes can be gone like that.
Before heading home, Tyler stops off at his uncle’s house.
Everyone is away for a few days, so Tyler has agreed to take care
of a few things while they’re gone.
Security is important here too. When you’re away from home, you
always want to keep your house safe, and locked.
Far too many times people put keys in places that they
shouldn’t, for the contractor, for the housekeeper, for the kid
coming home from school. They put them under mats, they
put them under rocks in the garden that look nothing like
other rocks. You always want to keep it in
something very secure, like a key safe.
A key safe, using the same word lock innovations, allows keys
and small valuables, such as a set of car keys and credit
cards, to be made available knowing the more easily
remembered letter combinations. Hey, a 20!
Thanks uncle, now let’s get down to business.
On the gate is a weather proof, resettable, 4-dial discus lock,
with a stainless steel body, and rubber bumpers, to protect
surfaces from scratching. It’s great for outdoor
applications like public storage lockers, equipment storage
sheds, and gates. Well, it’s very important to
keep your back yard secure. We’ve had all summer, people
have been outside with things like your barbecue grills, your
lawn mowers, your power tools, your porch furniture, and then
summer is over. I’ve had individuals actually
ride riding mowers right outside of gates.
These things can all be avoided with a weather-proof padlock to
put on your gate. After some bonding time with his
uncle’s dog, it’s time to head home, where it’s time to get to
work on the really fun stuff. A new dirt bike is waiting in
the garage, and Tyler just needs to do some maintenance before he
takes it on the road. The tools belong to dad, and
Tyler is one of the few people who knows the easy to remember
combination. You should also keep your
valuables inside your home locked up.
Things such as firearms, important documents, jewelry,
expensive tools. These things can all be locked
up with a combination lock that’s easy to use and easy to
remember. The resettable text lock uses a
resettable 3-letter combination with a click dial that ensures
accuracy. It’s the world’s only word lock
with all 26 letters of the alphabet.
Tools like these are expensive, and so are dirt bikes.
Even though they’re in the garage, they’re best kept
locked, so only Tyler and his dad can get to them.
What good is a lock if you can’t remember the combination?
Words are so much easier to remember than numbers.
Do yourself a favor and keep it simple.
Choose a combination lock that uses words.
It’s as easy as ABC. The easy to remember user
created combination lock makes it simple for a family to secure
valuable belongings, and keep off limits areas locked.

travel locks and cable locks, visit WordLock.com.

from school, it was utter chaos. It was her first year away and
when school got out for the summer, she had so many things
that she needed to pack up. It is amazing what can
accumulate after just one year. I finished my first year of
college and when it was time to go home it was like packing a
house. I mean, I had to clear out right
away. It was so stressful.
As part of our back to college special, Kids Spaces introduced
Melanie and Brianna to Sophia Hutchinson.
Program manager for U-haul Internationals College Boxes

I’m ready to go. I can’t believe it.
The prices of college boxes are very reasonable.
Everything is right there on our website.
