I’m Gunnery Sergeant R.
Lee Ermey. Join me and a platoon of
dedicated professionals for another Military Makeover.
Okay boys, I want to hear hammers hammering, saws sawing.
Time for us to show our appreciation and give back to
those who have sacrificed. This is Designing Spaces:
Military Makeover and it starts right now.
Who is Robert Keefe? What has he done to serve his
country? Why should he get a Military
Makeover? Well, just in case you missed
our first episode, you’re about to find out.
I grew up in Okeechobee, Florida.
Graduated Okeechobee High School in 1996, and went to a couple
years of college and then joined the Marine Corps.
Before joining the Marine Corp, Robert was working as a produce
manager at a local grocery store.
I was a cashier, and he worked as a produce manager.
I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her.
I used every tactic just to talk to her.
Finally, she agreed to go on a date with me, and first date,
first kiss. Soon after, Robert enlisted and
joined the Marine Corp. We averaged 6-10 IED strikes
every mission. My truck alone hit five IEDs.
The first one destroyed the front end, nobody was hurt.
Robert was lucky to escape three more IED attacks, but his luck
eventually ran out. The fifth IED strike was the one
that injured me. The injuries were serious.
Diagnosis: Vertebrae compression fracture, traumatic brain
injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The incident did not go unnoticed back home.
I actually had a dream and I saw it, and what happened was, I
felt it. Wow.
I’m alive and I have all my limbs.
I feel very very blessed. Now it’s time for us, at
Designing Spaces to give back to Robert and his family.
With the help of the Gunny, we’ll transform their home and
give it a serious upgrade. Your wish is our command.
The heavy lifting will begin right after this.
(hammering). (power tool sounds).
Our military makeover is shaping up inside the house, but what’s
happening outside? Let’s talk curb appeal, people.
As part of our Military Makeover, Robert Keefe and
family are getting a brand new garage door.
Here to tell us about it is Greg Ferris, south region sales
manager for Entramatic. So great to have you here today,
and you know what? A lot of people think when they
remake the outside of their house that you paint, landscape,
but there’s one big thing that can make a huge impact, and
that’s a new garage door. That’s true.
There’s tremendous curb appeal in the new garage doors that are
made. You can see this one has the
wood grain finish. It has the hinges and handles as
accents. it can really make a difference
from the curb. This new garage door installed
by Allied Doors South Florida will reduce noise from entering
the house, improve the homes value, and of course increase
curb appeal. It also adds to your energy
efficiency, isn’t that right? It does.
This door has a 9R value. We have doors that go up to a
19R value, so if your house is insulated, garage and attic are
insulated, you might as well add insulation to your garage door.
R value is a measure of resistance to heat flow through
a given thickness of material. In theory, that means the higher
the R value, the greater that resistance.
We’ll be back to see this garage door come together, but first,
let’s find out a little bit more about the tools we used during
this major makeover. If you’re building something,
you need tools. You need something reliable,
sturdy. Something that will last you a
life time. (power tools sounds).
Haha, oh yeah. There’s one special tool that’s
been a part of many tasks completed and in progress here
in the Keefe home, and to tell us all about it, we invited
Brian Vraneck from Bosch tools to show us a new way to measure.
It’s great to be here and Bosch definitely, from the power tools
side to the measuring tools side, Bosch definitely has the
right product for the user. Now, in a situation like this
where we’re doing so many types of jobs, where we’re taking out
walls, we’re hanging cabinets, what does Bosch come with that
is different from other tool brands?
Right, well Bosch is always innovating and you know, one
thing that I wanted to show today is this really neat GLM 15
laser measuring device. This is basically like a digital
tape measure. A one-button operation that’s
sure to make future home improvement work a lot easier,
and more accurate, as in 1/8″ more accurate.
One button operation. Turn it on.
You can get the distance to where the laser is pointing.
So we can basically figure out how many square feet of paint we
need to do, or hanging cabinets on the level, the whole deal,
right? Yep, absolutely, so you can take
a measurement wall to wall, figure out the width and height
of the wall. Get your square footage for
paint. You can also slide it up and
down the wall and see the measurements adjust in real
time. As you can see, first of all,
very compact size, so carry it around in your pocket.
It fits in there nice and easy. One button operation.
Just click that button. The laser is activated, and as I
move the device closer and further from my hand, you can
see the measurements move in real time right on the screen in
front of you. Yeah I can see that.
Press the button again, hold the measurement, again to reactivate
it. Again, it’s that simple.
Wow. Very easy to measure with.
And that’s great. You’re not messing around with a
different bunch of buttons. You’re not writing things down.
You’ve got the measurement right there in the digital display.
Absolutely, and just like, instead of you know using a tape
measure and fumbling with the tape, again this is very quick
and easy to use. It measures out to 50 feet.
How many times have we had to have two people pulling out the
tape measure, the thing snaps back at you.
This solves that entire problem. Absolutely.
One person operation so that solves it with the two people,
and yeah hurting yourself with the tape snapping back at you.
While the construction process is in full swing, the backyard
makeover still has a way to go, but new outdoor furniture will
certainly add to the aesthetic. As part of our military
makeover, we are setting up the Keefes with some stylish patio
furniture. Of course, they get to choose it
themselves. We wouldn’t have it any other
way. Hopefully it’s a little more
comfortable than what I’m sitting on here.
Ahhh… Want to go join them?
Once again, this May, Macy’s is kicking off a summer celebration
of American icons. A patriotic salute to people,
places and things that make America great.
As part of American icons, Macy’s is honoring veterans with
an in-store gift bag program to benefit Got Your 6.
We’ll learn more about this awesome initiative a little
later. This is Ron Trevone, and he’s
here to show Robert and Bianca some exciting outdoor options.
I’m so excited to be here today at the Macy’s Furniture Gallery.
Our back yard has been totally decimated by my dogs, and I’m
really looking forward to having them help me select some fine
outdoor furniture for my patio. Hello, welcome to Macy’s, how
can I help you? Hi, good morning.
Looking for some patio furniture.
Great assortment, let’s go look. Alright, thanks.
So, this is one of our newer collections.
Why don’t you have a seat and see if it’s comfortable for you.
So, tell me about your style. Well, we’re thinking about
designs, and I’m more of the traditional type, and she’s more
of the modern contemporary type. Perfect, perfect choice.
Lots of seating, lots of color. Clean lines, but yet those
traditional elements. As for a chair, why don’t you
try the swivel chair. You look like somebody that
loves a swivel chair. I love swivel chairs.
Swivel chairs give the option to spin around and see the person
next to you, opening up the space to have conversations with
friends and family. Awesome.
I like it. It’s really comfortable.
We’re really excited about the different color options and the
styles. A lot to choose from.
OVer here we have one with an azure blue cushion, which is a
fun blue, which is more contemporary.
Fun blue. I like fun.
I’m going to show you some oranges and grays, even though
the elements are kind of traditional to contemporary to
modern, you can infuse the different colors by adding throw
pillows, accents, accessories and all that, so kind of makes
your own personal space. Perfect.
Great. He has shown us from
contemporary to traditional, which is awesome, because I
didn’t think traditional could look so good.
Let’s go look at a round table. Alright, wonderful.
See if you’d be happy with that. Sure.
So, here we have a 42 inch round table.
So, as Ron was taking us to the last table, I immediately
noticed the orange, the bright orange really caught my eye.
Of course I thought of the kids and when they’re running around,
they’re not going to run into the corners.
You can add more chairs to it. You can get six chairs
around here comfortably. You could all have like a great
conversation, friends and family, and really enjoy the
quality time together in your new house.
This is super comfy. It is.
I like it a lot. I like this.
Is this the table the Keefes are going to go with?
We’ll find out after the break. Before the break, we sent Robert
and Bianca to Macy’s to shop for some outdoor furniture, but
before we rejoin them, let’s take a look at some life
insurance options for our men and women in uniform, Military
families should have their own security and protection.
That can start with life insurance.
Some old friends have joined us with some good old advice.
Once again, Military Makeover welcomes my buddy, Roy Gibson.
Tell us about some of the things for those who may not know what
MVA does on a day to day basis for all of our veterans that are
involved with the program. We were founded as a non-profit
back in 1956, originally for the purpose of providing quality
affordable group term life insurance for enlisted service
members, because at the time they had very few choices.
Over the years, the MBA expanded their eligibility to all active
duty military personnel and their spouses.
One might think that military personnel would have a difficult
time finding quality life insurance, because of the high
risk work that comes with the territory, but Roy is here to
tell us that this isn’t the case.
The military group actually is considered by the insurance
industry to be a good risk, because they have fitness
standards they have to adhere to.
They have readily available medical help, and they have
checkups periodically. Moving forward, MBA is getting
more and more involved in the community, seen here, with our
very own military makeover. The front and back yard is being
worked on by a local landscaping company, and is sponsored by
MBA. Let’s take a quick break from
life insurance to give a salute to the local Okeechobee
community for coming together to make this makeover a huge
success. The Tin Fish restaurant provided
the catering for the crew, and believe me, if Gunny doesn’t get
a good meal, he gets cranky. The folks from Island Cabinet
are working tirelessly on the kitchen makeover using kitchen
cabinets provided by our friends at Choice Cabinets.
A makeover of this magnitude sure produces a lot of trash.
Waste Management was there to help with that.
Robert and Bianca are getting beautiful new tile in their
master bedroom courtesy of DMB tile.
On behalf of Designing Spaces, we salute all of you.
Now back to life insurance. Did you know that 65% of
American families have some type of life insurance, totaling 19
trillion dollars. There are good reasons why any
family should have life insurance, certainly the main
wage earner in the family. You can still get life insurance
even if you are deployed, correct?
Absolutely. We had, probably during Iraq and
Afghanistan, probably 175 casualties with military members
that were members of Military Benefit Association and we paid
over 27 million dollars in benefits.
When you look at that it’s not a very good business proposition,
but it’s the right thing, and that’s why we exist, so we’re
very proud that we’re able to help those military families in
a tough time. MBA can also help in areas like
financial planning and assistance.
Career planning, as well as health and wellness benefits
among other things that allow families to stay healthy and
save money. By taking advantage of
opportunities to learn more about how to manage family
finances, that’s a good thing for military families.
Well, we couldn’t thank you enough for all that you’re doing
here, and the landscaping and everything else, so before we
forget, how do we get in touch with you guys?
Well, our home page is at MilitaryBenefit.org and we’ve
got a toll free number 877-MBA-1020, so there will be
people answering phones there that can walk you through the
process of applying for insurance or any additional
information, whatever you need. Well, I think it’s great, and
you know, we should probably get out of here before they turn the
sprinklers on us. I wouldn’t mind that right now.
Haha, well, thanks Roy, me too. Okay, great.
Thanks, Art. Time to check back in with
Robert and Bianca. Looks like they’re close to
making a decision. I think the set is going to look
amazing in our back yard. Just the color is going to
go awesome with our house colors and with all our tropical plants
that we have. It’s just going to play right
into it. Now that Robert and Bianca have
chosen their dream furniture, let’s find out what this Got
Your 6 program is all about. In the military, “Got Your 6”
means “got your back” but here at Macy’s, we got their back.
Before you go, Macy’s has an awesome program.
It’s called #AmericanSelfie. So for every selfie we take and
post on social media, Macy’s donates a dollar to Got Your 6
program. Wow, awesome.
Got Your 6 supports veterans to get back into the work force
after their service, and we here at Macy’s has supported them for
over three years, raised over 5 million dollars.
Got six. So, you ready for that selfie?
Let’s do it. Cool.
Give back. Thank you so much.
What an honor and privilege to be served with such wonderful
people and a great organization such as Macy’s.
We feel so blessed. I want to cry for this, so thank
you Macy’s. Visit Macys.com to see more
selections available at a Macy’s near you.
When we come back, we’ll find out more about this accurate
laser measuring device by Bosch. Plus, we’ll see the garage door
install come together. Let’s check back in with Brian
from Bosch Tools. There’s lots more to learn about
this reliable measuring device. Although this device could
easily be used in any professional application, it’s
available for all you do it yourself home improvement
warriors out there. With a price point of $49.99,
this can be used by the professional, but also the
person that’s working out and measuring at home.
Think of measuring out the backsplash in the kitchen, think
of measuring out a room or the floor for tiles, or you know,
again, measuring up a wall to see where that shelf needs to
go. That is an excellent thing.
Even a picture. Hanging a picture, you want to
make sure it’s the certain height above the couch so you
don’t hit the back of your head into it.
That is a perfect application. Absolutely.
Perfect. Now, with the Keefe family,
Robert’s getting an entire set of Bosch tools.
He’s going to love this. What made it special for you
guys to be a part of this project?
Oh, absolutely. You know Bosch, any chance we
get to be in the community, and help people out.
We know we have the tools for all the applications, so this
was a great opportunity again for us to be in the community,
and to show the tools we have, and also to help by donating
some of those. Thanks for being here, man.
Appreciate it, thank you. This is a great tool for various
professionals. From contractors, electricians,
remodelers, to real estate agents and appraisers.
The GLM 15 is also a great tool for anyone to measure around the
house. It’s compact, simple to use, and
very accurate. To find out more about this
measuring device, and everything else Bosch Tools related, visit
BoschTools.com. Time to check
back with Greg Farris, and see how the garage install is coming
along. An insulated garage door helps
maintain the temperature in the garage, while the temperature
outside gets extremely hot or cold.
Tell us about some of the safety features.
Well, the door has finger-safe technology, so when kids may be
playing in the front or on the inside, when the door is going
up or down, it actually pushes their finger out of the way.
It’s called finger-safe technology.
Wow, is that something new to the industry?
It is. It’s been around, we’ve had it
for about six years. We’ve been around since,
actually, 1951, the AMR garage door company, and door quality
has really improved, and safety features also.
This garage door, selected for the Keefes, is an AMR heritage
HR3000. A triple layer insulated steel
traditional garage door with short panels and decorative
hardware. A lot of people might be saying
“gosh, that looks way too nice, I can’t afford that.”
It’s really not that much of a big upgrade, is it?
It’s really not. It’s a slight uptick from the
standard garage door, but the value you get is strictly
aesthetics, insulation, curb value, it’s well-worth it.
And you don’t have to paint it. You don’t.
If you were to have that faux painted, it may cost you up to
$600. That right there is not that
much more to have it look just like real wood.
This AMR steel garage door is made with up to 90% recycled
materials. 5-7% of the materials used at
the plant are actually recycled, and all the doors are made in
the USA. A new garage door is purchased
from a professional garage door dealer located near you.
The dealer will meet you at your home to measure your garage door
opening and determine with you which garage door to order.
To find a local AMR dealer near you, visit the dealer locator on
AMR.com. Boys, looking good getting them
cabinets up. We’re getting someplace here.
Hoorah. Keep up the good work.
Now as you can see, the boys are just beat up.
They are exhausted. They need to take a break, so
see you next time on Military Makeover, Designing Spaces.
Don’t make me have to come over to your house and adjust your
