Fall 2018 Mechanical Engineering Design Expo

Fall 2018 Mechanical Engineering Design Expo

We’re here today at the Mechanical
Engineering Design Expo where ME 270 and ME 415 students have come together
to create a product. For my particular design I took a lot of the knowledge
that we learned from physics with kinetic energy and figuring out how much
torque could be produced. A lot of the materials we used were some donated
parts I know some teams use concrete, plywood, screws, nuts and bolts, that sort
of thing. For the senior design capstone project you meet with a sponsor to begin with and you discuss a project that they have and
give to you. They discuss you know what the scope of the project
is, what deliverables they’re looking for for the outcome of it and you really
discuss up you know a project outline for what you’re gonna do the rest of the
semester. From there you work in the group and trying to accomplish you know
the many tasks leading up to the bigger ones to end up completing the
project. A lot of the problems that we faced involved problem solving so a lot
of basic conceptual things are very important that you learn early on as
well as in your you know math and science courses. Simple things like
force diagrams and freebody diagrams are really important to understanding what’s
going on in the system and how to how to really analyze it. Doing ME 415 is a very good representation of what I’ll be experiencing in the real
world. Going throughout the whole project process seeing it from start to
finish and seeing the whole process as a whole really gives me a better
understanding to what I’ll be seeing in the future as well as working in a group
you know with a diverse set of skills really gives me a better understanding
to how to approach different problems that I’ll encounter in the workspace.
