Fashion Design

♪ Hi, my name is Nicole Foti. I’m the Fashion Design
and Merchandising Instructor at Ulster BOCES. We’re looking for students
who are interested in fashion. Someone who is creative,
has an open mind, and is willing to work hard
in order to succeed. Some of the things that students
can expect to work on in Fashion Design
and Merchandising class are pattern-making,
we work on fashion illustration, we learn the basics
of sewing knowledge, and also working
on the computer with Adobe Photoshop
and Illustrator. Students will also
get the experience of learning
the business end of fashion and understanding what it is
to market to a consumer and sell your product. Students have the opportunity
to make their own clothes. They will design
the patterns themselves, and sew them
in order to create a garment entirely from scratch. So the path
that students can take after their experience
at Ulster BOCES is to move forward
to a two or four-year college to study fashion. There’s a science
behind textiles and behind the fabric that
you make your garments out of, and so it’s important
to understand that science and know how certain fabrics are gonna drape
around the body or potentially react to fire
or other elements outside. And so we incorporate science
into the curriculum so that it’s
a fun way to learn about how each textile is made. Math is really important in both pattern-making
and sewing, as well as the business end to understand
how it incorporates when it comes to measurements or pricing a garment,
costing a garment, and how you’re going
to sell it to your consumer. You do not have to sew, you do not have
to know how to draw, you don’t have to have
any of those basic skills. These are skills
that you will learn in class. So as long as you come
with an open mind in terms of learning those,
you’ll succeed in this class. ♪
