Happy Independence Day from Interior!

Hi, I’m David Bernhardt, Secretary of the
Interior. This Fourth of July marks the 243rd anniversary
of our Founding Fathers’ assembling in Philadelphia to declare our nation’s independence. Following the Continental Congress’s vote
of support to declare independence from Great Britain, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail
that this day “will be celebrated by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival”
and that the celebration “ought be solemnized with Pomp and Parade…from one End of this
Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” 243 years later, he still could not be more
right. Whether you’re here in DC and joining us
for the Salute to America on the National Mall or on the west coast celebrating with
friends and family shooting off fireworks in your backyard, we are all united in honoring
those who declared our liberty centuries ago. This year, we also recognize the men and women
in our armed services who have defended our freedoms ever since. For me and everyone at the Department of the
Interior, thank you for your dedication in preserving our public lands, keeping our citizens
safe, and serving the public every day to make this country the best it can be. Have a happy and safe Independence Day and
God bless America.
