Making Functional Design Fun – HGTV

[music playing] TIFFANY BROOKS
(VOICEOVER): In design, creating something that
is both fun and functional can get a little bit tricky. So here are three examples
to get those creative juices flowing a little bit. The first example is
this fire pit cover. It actually has been painted
with the tic-tac-toe board. It’s very cute. This same concept could be used
for the surface of any table. The next example is
this flip-down shelf. This project does double duty
by working as a serving space when folded up, and it looks
really good, like a piece of art, when it’s folded down. This is custom,
but the same idea could be interpreted
with anything that looks one way when
in use and totally different when it’s put away. The last example are
these rope-wrapped posts. They look like decorative
elements in this space, and they are, but they’re
also 4 by 4’s that securely hold up these overhead shapes. This same idea can be used for
anything functional that may stick out like a sore thumb. Think about those load-bearing
beams or plumbing pipes that you have in your home. Making something functional
into something fun is often tricky to do. But when you get
creative in design, it could be a home
run hit for everyone.
