Meet Shelley | Designer

I was born deaf because of a virus my
mum got in was she’s pregnant with me but basically, I have 0% in my left
and about 40% in my right, but together with the hearing aid and lip-reading, I’m
able to have a normal conversation. I’m an ambassador for talk-sign which is
basically, a company that promotes sign language and I understand to host free
sign language workshops for the deaf and the hearing mainly for the hearing
people to learn sign language so then we can bridge the gap between deaf people
and hearing people I’ve met so many interesting and wonderful new people
through Talk-Sign and teaching language and workshops from all walks of
life and it’s just great to see everyone come together in one room and to put
their differences aside and just to interact with them to get to know all
their backgrounds where they’ve come from and everyone can converse in one
universal sign language. And this is something I’m very passionate about and
something that’s lacking in South Africa at the moment so I really want to spread
awareness of sign language. I always say disability is never something that holds
you back I always see it as an ability to strive for something better and
just push beyond that boundary and it does give you a reason to just aim far
beyond other people I love the fact that I’m teaching a
complete new language to hearing people and it’s sure and speak for
language and just to see their faces light up when they’ve learnt a word I
just love to see them pass on that knowledge to their friends or their
partners and family so I just think I hope that I’m making a difference So, from all the workshops that I hosted, I definitely think it’s given me
more confidence to present myself in front of a work environment for example
I recently did a Jellyfish Talk so for that it was a big thing for me to stand
in front of everyone corporate environments and actually present when
I’ve been doing most of my life Being a Talk-Sign ambassador and hosting sign
language workshops I feel it’s given me the traits of being passionate dedicated and
I feel these two are merged when it comes to doing my actual job
because I use my hands to communicate that language I feel that I am
definitely more visual when it comes to work I can constantly come up with
different ways to communicate a project or an idea to a client
