Netskope Cloud Trailblazer — Mehboob Alam, thinkx digital, healthcare cyber security architect

My name is Mehboob Alam. And I’m a cyber security
and technical architect. I work in health care
education and research. I’m currently a consultant. My company’s Think X Digital. I’m working with
organizations to help with the digital
transformation process. For the last three
or four years, I’ve been looking on how people
work in their personal lives and how they work in
their enterprise lives. And there was a huge
gap between them. Everyone knows what
a website looks like. But when they come
to the office, they have to use all
these traditional tools. And I was trying to figure
out how can I bridge that so that you can
bring the enthusiasm of modern applications to
the enterprise environment. During the summer– last summer,
I took a trip to Germany, and we went up to Heidelberg. And saw all the castle ruins. And I had my aha moment there. I thought like this is what
IT security looks like. We’re building castles and
trying to protect people by building walls. For most people, a
lot of collaboration happens on the go. You run into someone and you
say, hey, I have an idea. I want to do something about it. Can we get together
and work on this? When was the last
time you heard someone say let me get back to my
desk and send you an email? That doesn’t happen anymore. Let’s take another situation,
where you’re a medical student. In order for you
to be effective, you need access to
patient information. You have to interact
with people. You have to exchange
information, watch the flow of how a medical team works. You need good tools that
engage you in communication, remove all the obstacles
to exchanging information, yet respect all the
rules and regulations of the medical industry in
protecting patient data. And cloud-based environments
are the best way to do it. Shadow IT now is a big concern. If you don’t know
what people are doing, there’s no way for you to
protect the organization or to find out how to
enable people to work, to do their work, but
do it in a safe manner. Make the network
transparent to the user so that you can actually
see what’s going on. Anyone with a phone can
just switch off the wi-fi and go online and
continue doing their work. So blocking things
at the firewall, blocking things at
the network level, that’s just a losing battle. I’ve spent a lot of time
researching products, but sometimes there’s
always this chance moment when you see something that
you have never knew existed. And that’s how I found Netskope. I went to a meet
up with some peers. And I saw a demo of Netskope. And I thought, aha. In the five minutes, I was able
to see exactly what the product did, how it was designed. And I said, that’s what
the future looks like. This product was designed
to work in the cloud, cloud native, and work
with mobile products. That was a light bulb moment. And I said, I have to try this. So we were moving about 1,000
students over to Google Apps. And we needed a
way of seeing what are people doing, you know,
what kind of documents are they storing online, the
criticality of the documents, sensitivity of the
documents, and also what was the sharing activity. Are people sharing documents
outside the organization? Are they sharing it
amongst themselves? And Netskope had very,
very fine grained analytics to show the activity
of the students. I was very impressed
with Netskope, because they seem to have a
very, very clear vision of what the future looked like and
a very comprehensive design on how to protect everything
from the future working backwards to today. And Netskope is an
organization that’s been very, very responsive and
taken ideas and implemented into their products. They’ve been an
excellent partner. And I would highly recommend
working with Netskope.
