specializing in what they do, and I’ve always felt like an ET. I have a bachelor degree
in Industrial Design, and while I was at university
I worked at a furniture store. I worked there for about two years, became manager
and got to know many people. It was a small store but which gave success to great designers
who are out there on the market. I had many friends who have already gone
on exchange programs, some fluent in English or French. I’d say, “I want to communicate
with everyone in the world.” So I started studying
French, Italian, and Spanish. I graduated from the university
and went to the United States intending to stay for two months,
but ended up staying two years. During the first week I got to know the owner
of a furniture store who invited me to work as sales designer. I started working on the weekends and once my English improved
I worked full-time attending clients. I was gradually becoming fluent in English I did a course
in Interior Design at a college to see if my English was good enough. I saw that it was
and said, “OK, my English is good.” I did the course and loved it, I’d already done Industrial Design. I returned and decided
to specialize in interior design. I did another accredited course
here in Brazil. I got to know a very nice person
who is my friend, Karla. She asked me to work in landscaping,
which was her profession. She said, “It would be a new experience that also involves project work.” I said, “No, landscaping isn’t for me, you have to get to the market very early get your hands and nails dirty, watch those bugs
crawling around on the plants. No, that’s not for me. I don’t want that.” And I said, “I want to do
Interior Design.” Then I wondered, “Should I return to commerce
and earn more, or work for an architecture
and interior design firm, where I’ll earn less
but find more satisfying.” I ended up working in offices
with some great architects. But I had to leave
because of financial problems, and I went back into commerce again. I worked for big companies
who are very demanding with their sales, they have quotas to fill that employees cry over
at the end of the month, and I had to maintain my sanity. So I started studying. I’d see my friends crying
and try to calm them down. I’d go to the bathroom
and do some mentalizing. They sent me to the training area. I already had a really good CV, I’d worked in almost all the areas
of interior design. I started to teach floor planning
to the suppliers and managers, I taught them how a furniture
was manufactured, what kind of foam and wood was better,
what was a good fabric and what was not. I spent almost a year doing this job, but the department ended up closing down. It’s only natural
that we have bad experiences, and I prefer to talk about the good ones. But when they fired me,
when my department was closed, it was the day before my birthday, and I was devastated
because I loved my work, I never imagined leaving this job. I wanted to work for years in a company, but my life didn’t permit me
to stay in one place. I was invited to work at the office
owned by João Armentano. In the first month, I received a project
for the island of Caras Magazine. He said, “Go there and work on it,
do the measurements.” The theme of the project was Monet. I took my knowledge of landscaping so I put colorful flowers and vases; tones that remind us of Monet’s paintings
I incorporated into the design. Everyone loved it,
and it was a great success. All the artists wanted
to be photographed in that space. I would walk by an advertisement
and think to myself, “Advertisers must be happy people, they do a job where people can see
what they’ve done, sometimes nice, beautiful things
that transmit good feelings to others.” I wanted to do this. When I did this project, when people came up
and talked to me about it, I felt I was professionally recognized, which was great for me. I’ve always lived this balance
between dualities: working in the commercial area,
or with creativity; working with the public, or by myself. As any good Libran
I had to find balance in life. I started to study more and more
spiritual and oriental things, such as Taoism, Buddhism, and Yoga, all these philosophical studies. As I had already found
fulfillment in my work, I dedicated myself more to studies. And as soon as I left I started receiving
many invitations from stores to do showrooms, displays. This is a showroom I did
for the Ravioli antique store and which had a really good repercussion, because it was all in blue
in the Christmas period. It was a conceptual study,
to bring tranquility for those who are having
Christmas dinner with their family. The actor Regina Duarte loved it. There was a wishing tree for everyone
to write a wish and hang it up. When it was over, we had
a tree filled with wishes. In 2013, I was invited to do a showroom
for Artefacto at D&D Mall. I also worked with chromotherapy. I created rooms with beige tones to give a sensation
of coziness and tranquility, green to remind us of nature, and red, because a double bedroom needs to be a little vibrant
for couples dating. Clients started coming to me
with problems inside their homes, since despite having hired a decorator
or having the money to do great things, they couldn’t create harmony
within their homes. This client had hired
an interior decorator who put up orange walls
in beautiful tones, with wine-colored sofas
and a carpet with big flower patterns. But the client was a very active person
who stayed at home a lot and these colors were very vibrant. She started becoming
very irritated inside her house and was unable to stay inside,
not knowing what the problem was. I said to her, “I’m going to do an analysis
of your house, and we’ll do chromotherapy. I won’t change everything,
but I’ll harmonize what is necessary.” People say, “Everything is beige
in the decoration.” Why beige? The color beige is
like a background that nestles you, like that late afternoon,
sort of earth-like. It’s a nice color to have
inside the house. So, with just a few elements,
while still keeping some of her things, it gave vivacity
through making some changes. Another client of mine had sofas
and furniture that he wanted to keep, so I harmonized the room
and brought in some colors. This family didn’t stay much at home, didn’t get together very much
in the living room. So I added colors, like lilac and blue. I’d read and study a lot,
and I created a group on Facebook. People started to see
the tips I was giving and a newspaper from the city
of Santo André asked me to write for them. I started writing a column
called “Bem Estar.” I’d give tips related
to interior design, travel, Orientalism, studies, yoga, and everything
that implies well-being to me. I ended up creating another blog,
I already had two, called “Um Bem Estar” in order to publicize tips, ideas,
and books reviews that I wrote. At that point, people started asking me,
“Why don’t you give yoga classes?” I’d say, “What do you mean? I’m an interior designer,
I don’t teach yoga.” “But you’ve been
practicing yoga for so long, you study so hard, you should!” A friend of mine, Adriana, asked me, “Are you going to participate
in Yoga for Peace?” That was in 2012. I said, “I think I’ll go there,
watch a show, take part in a class.” “Aren’t you going to teach people?” “But I’m not a yoga instructor!” That infuriated me. I went up to my yoga teacher, and said, “People are asking me
when I’m going to teach yoga.” He said, “When are you going to?” I said, “What do you mean?
I’m an interior designer.” He said, “You don’t have to let go
of what you already do to teach yoga. You can do it little by little.” So I went to do
a training course for a year. Last year was a year …
not exactly a sabbatical because I was working
and studying at the same time, with that confusion, “Is it going
to be interior design or yoga? How I am going to balance these two?” I used my techniques in meditation
in order to maintain my mental balance. David, a friend of mine
who teaches yoga for kids asked me to teach at “Mundo Kids” event
that was on last year. I hadn’t even finished the training course and I was giving classes
in an event with 4,000 kids. It was three classes
with more than 100 students, teaching yoga to those kids, and everyone loved it. There’s no greater satisfaction than seeing the children
and parents after the class with smiles on their faces. Happiness doesn’t exist
in the work that you do, it exists within you. Whatever you’re doing, if you’re feeling well,
you’ll be happy and successful, things will happen
because that’s the Law of Attraction. If you are well and happy
you attract good things. I finally participated in Yoga for Peace in my “Um Bem Estar” studio
in Santo André. See here the smiles of my students. I teach a course with some meditations
especially for our energy centers, then we draw. Here I could see our energy field
that forms itself around us, the chakra movements which are energy centers,
the seven principal ones in our body. I’d like to do a meditation
with you called, “The inner smile.” It’s a technique
I’ve been practicing for a while. Yesterday I practiced it a lot
because I was a little nervous and anxious because I couldn’t finish
the presentation with so much to do. I’d like you to sit up, if possible, away from
the back of your seat, with your palms resting
on your thighs, facing upwards. Close your eyes and breathe
only through your nose. Breathe in deeply
and feel the air through your nostrils. Relax your shoulders. Breathe in and relax. Breathe out and relax your whole body. Pay attention to the movement
of your diaphragm, which affects the movement
of your abdomen. It’s very important
to do this longer breathing and be conscious of your internal organs. Feel your belly rising and falling
while you breathe, but naturally, without forcing. When we bring our attention
to our internal organs we increase the strength of these organs
and improve the blood flow, the circulation
and oxygenation of the cells. This keeps you still and calms you down. Pay attention to one of your organs, it could be the spleen,
pancreas, intestine, the reproductive organs,
the bladder, or the stomach. Mentalize one of those organs and feel the tranquility,
feel the happiness. As if you were talking internally to it. Smile to it … really smile. Breathe in and feel this smile
on your organs. Our body is naturally happy. Our whole being
is naturally happy, all of our cells. Breathe in deeply and feel this happiness that is a part of you. May this happiness last forever. When you see a sunset, when you see a dear person
smiling back at you. Anytime we want, we can remind ourselves of this peaceful time
of smiling and being happy. Thank you. (Applause)
