Scott, CAD designer

SCOTT: I am Scott MacDonald. I work at FMC Technologies and I am a CAD
Designer. I work in the subsea industry and we basically
produce components or a product that sits on the seabed. They are basically described as giant taps
and basically, you can switch this on or off and then when it’s on, it’s producing the
oil and gas up to the rig. My job is important because the models we
create and the drawings we create, the guys on the shop floor actually manufacture these. They can’t create the product without the
drawing. Normally I am in at half 7 in the morning
and it involves a daily discussion about maybe some of the issues we are having on the shop
floor. I normally pick up a task request sheet and
the task request sheet comes from a design engineer and it’s basically detailing what
they are looking to get modelled. During my working day, I speak to many different
departments. So when I am creating a product, I might not
understand the function so I am speaking to senior designer engineers, finding out exactly
what it is used for. A good skill to have is a lot of patience
because sometimes we could do up to a 17 sheet drawing. You need to have a willingness to learn and
listen. It’s also good to have a strong technical
background. At school, I did subjects like graphic design communication, technological
studies. To sum up my job, it’s basically exciting.
I love how every day is a new day. There’s different challenges, different design
issues and you have to come up with solutions for these problems.
