T4E – Wall Layout

Hi. I’m Don Balluch. I’m the Construction Technology instructor for Kansas City Kansas Community College. Today, we’re going to review wall layout. When we’re dealing with wall layout, we have
to consider one principle, and that is what’s the wall gonna be
laid out in as far as on center. For our purposes here, we’re gonna lay
out a wall that 16-inch on center. Okay? When we lay out a wall the primary purpose for the layout is so that the sheathing will fit without having to cut it on our layout. So, when we have 16-inch centers, we’re
going to hook a tape measure on the edge of our board and we are going to measure over so that
we know what the edge of our next stud is going to be. When we say 16-inch on center, that means from this point, to the center
of this two-by (2×4) needs to be 16 inches on center. And so forth down the line. So the next stud will once again be 16-inch on center. For layout purposes, when we lay our tape measure down we
want to mark a line so that we can mark where the studs are going to go. So when I lay them for my first marked
down this mark is actually gonna be at 15 and a quarter, which is three-fourths less than the 16, because we want it to land 16-inch on center. So if I continue to draw this layout the
way it is my next mark to my next stud will actually fall at thirty one and a
quarter, so that 32 will land in the center of that stud. The reason behind that is a standard sheath of plywood measures 4×8. So what we want is when we put the
plywood on this particular wall we want the plywood to actually break on a stud. So our next layout would come to 47 and a quarter, which means that at the
center of that stud, it will be at 48. So that when we go to sheath this
particular wall I will lay a piece of sheathing on here And that piece of sheathing that measures 4ft will break on that stud so that I have something to nail to before I put the next piece of sheathing. on to continue on that wall. So that’s the principle you need to
think about and that would be part one for this
particular segment on wall layout
