Tour a modern and moody master retreat

Hi, I’m Karin, I own the design firm Karin
Bennett Designs. Here we are in King West, Toronto in our clients’ master bedroom
retreat. In this bedroom, we wanted to have the space feel airy and welcome, but
we have a whole wall of windows so we ended up selecting this dark navy to
balance out all the light coming in from the window. This is a large bedroom, so we wanted to incorporate large pieces of furniture so the scale fit properly. We
ended up with a king-sized bed with a large tufted headboard, and these white
mirrored nightstands. They’re really large at 34-inches each and it just
helps fill up the space in this large-scale room. Previously, everything
was dark in this bedroom. We had dark paint, we had dark floors,
dark bedding, and dark nightstands. So we wanted to lighten up the space. That’s
why we chose nice bedding, this is like a boutique hotel vibe, which was the look
we are going for for these clients. We designed this room with large-scale
furniture including these lamps, they’re very tall and I like that they have a
reflective feel. They match the chandelier in the ceiling, which gives
that cohesive feel throughout the space. We designed this barn door behind me to
be custom to the space. We wanted to paint it out so we gave it a light gray
finish and that matched the rest of the Metrie doors in our condo. I like the way
it feels in this bedroom because it’s a modern take on a traditional barn door.
In this condo we have two bathrooms. One is dark and for this one it’s very light
and airy. We highlighted the floor and the shower wall in a beautiful porcelain
tile that looks like Carrara marble, which gives it a high-end feel, but it’s
better on the budget. In this bathroom we incorporated black matte fixtures. I love
the way they feel with the wall-mounted faucet and the fixtures in the shower.
They blend seamlessly together and it balances out all the white in the
bathroom as well. One of my favorite elements in this
space is the custom mirror and the custom glass. We framed both of them out in a thin black metal frame, which plays on our boutique hotel vibe. In this
bathroom we designed a custom vanity to fit the space. It gives our clients
plenty of storage and I really like the black painted finish. When our clients
first saw their bedroom they were thrilled with how it turned out. It
reminded them of a hotel they stayed at in Europe and that’s exactly the look
they wanted.
