Where the foothills of the Appalachian
Mountains meet the fields of the bluegrass region in the heart of
Lexington, Kentucky. Stands one of the United States of America’s historic
public universities the University of Kentucky. Established in 1865 the
University of Kentucky is proud to be an original land grant institution
providing quality education to students and fostering scientific breakthroughs.
Two scientists who studied at the University of Kentucky went on to win
the Nobel Prizes, Thomas Hunt Morgan and William Lipscomb. With its land-grant
mission to serve Kentucky the university has acted as a driving force for the
state’s economy. Today faculty, staff, and students are fulfilling the promises of
those early days. Home to more than 30,000 students and with an annual
operating budget of about 4 billion US dollars the university is an institution
that now is among the top 75 public universities in the United States. The
University attracts students, faculty, and visiting scholars for more than 100
countries around the world. 16 degree granting colleges and professional
schools are part of the University of Kentucky. The University of Kentucky operates an
extensive healthcare enterprise on its campus with a main hospital that is
nationally ranked. In total four hospitals make up the University of
Kentucky health care with a staff of physicians, nurses, and healthcare
professionals who treat tens of thousands of patients in over 80
specialized clinics across Kentucky every year. The university is one of only
eight institutions in the United States with the full complement of liberal arts,
engineering, professional, agricultural, and medical colleges and disciplines on
one contiguous campus. Interdisciplinary and collaborative work isn’t only easier
it’s encouraged. There are 13 interdisciplinary research centers at
the University allowing faculty, staff, and students to work together to answer
the most pressing questions of our time and discover new technologies to improve
the environment and transform communities locally and globally. Faculty,
staff, and students work together with determination to advance life-changing
and world-changing research. National rankings of the university’s research
portfolio demonstrate steady growth in both the quantity and quality of the
university’s research enterprise. University of Kentucky researchers are
supported by state-of-the-art facilities and an impressive library system which
houses 4.2 million volumes, 70,000 electronic journals, and 1.6 million
electronic books. The University of Kentucky’s research extends far beyond
the Lexington campus. In addition to ongoing international research
collaborations the university has developed strategic partnerships with
universities worldwide. The growth of the University’s research enterprise
reflects the momentum of the university as a whole. Across campus innovative
facilities lay a firm foundation for an increasing number of undergraduate and
graduate students from around the world. Our faculty and students are being
recognized for their work earning the most prestigious scholarships nationally
and internationally. University of Kentucky students recently have been
awarded Fulbright fellowships and Goldwater, NASA, Truman, and Rhodes
Scholarships. Propelled by a 2.3 billion US dollar
campus transformation the university is poised to reach higher as a global
leader in education and research. Many scholars are also attracted to the
community Lexington, Kentucky. Lexington is well known for being a safe, vibrant,
diverse, and welcoming community. The downtown area only a few blocks away
from campus has many restaurants, cultural activities, and of course
basketball. Rupp Arena is home to the University of Kentucky men’s basketball
team which has won eight national championships and is the winningest
program in the history of us college basketball. On campus students have
access to a broad network of resources and a diverse range of activities.
Faculty and staff support students through advising and dedicated career
services helping them pursue internships, undergraduate research projects, and
