Wednesday, May 24th: The Music Hall’s Kitchen Tour

KITCHEN SINK.>>PEOPLE ARE EXCITED TO SEE HOW OTHER PEOPLE LIVE, OR HOW THEY DECIDED TO DO A CERTAIN PAINT COLOR OR CABINETS. IT’S PRETTY INTERESTING. AUDREY: WHITE, BLUE, STEEL, AND GLASS, A DOZEN HOMES IN PORTSMOUTH OPENING THEIR DOORS FOR THE 26TH ANNUAL KITCHEN TOUR.>>KITCHENS ARE SOMETHING THAT PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS UPDATING AND MAKING CHANGES TO. IT’S THE HEART OF THE HOME. SO THAT’S WHAT PEOPLE LIKE TO SEE TO GET NEW IDEAS. PLUS, THERE IS SOMETHING REALLY FUN ABOUT GOING INTO SOMEONE ELSE’S HOUSE. AUDREY: THE MUSIC HALL KITCHEN TOUR IS A MAJOR FUNDRAISER FOR THIS HISTORIC THEATER. THIS YEAR, A DOZEN HOMES IN THE LITTLE HARBOR NEIGHBORHOOD WERE FEATURED. VISITORS ARE GIVEN MAPS AND CAN WALK TO EACH HOME. OUR FIRST STOP IS TO THE TAYLOR HOME. WARM, SUNNY, AND INVITING, ERIKA TAYLOR SAYS THEY TOOK THREE YEARS BUILDING THE HOUSE.>>WE WANTED IT TO BE , FIRST OF ALL, FAMILY-FRIENDLY BECAUSE WE HAVE THREE CHILDREN AND A DOG AND FRIENDS WE WANT TO HAVE OVER. AUDREY: THE TAYLORS WANTED A BLEND OF BEACHY WHILE MAINTAINING A TRADITIONAL LOOK.>>SO WE BROUGHT IN SOME BEACHY THEMES AND TRIED TO MIX THE TWO, BEACHY AND TRADITIONAL, AND THE SUMMER HOUSE REALLY HELPED US DO THAT. AUDREY: THE SUMMER HOUSE IN RYE HAS SPONSORED THE MUSIC HALL TOUR FOR SEVEN YEARS. THE OWNERS HELPED THE TAYLORS FURNISHED THEIR LIVING ROOM.>>ERICA WANTED TO HAVE MULTIPLE SEATING AREAS. SHE WASN’T QUITE SURE EXACTLY HOW SHE WANTED TO LAY IT OUT, BUT WE KNEW THAT SHE HAD A LOT OF TV WATCHERS, SO THAT WAS PART OF THE PLAN, AS WELL AS A PLACE TO ENTERTAIN GUESTS. AND OF COURSE, THE FIREPLACE HERE IS SO LOVELY THAT WE DEFINITELY WANTED TO — YES, IT WAS A FOCAL POINT. AUDREY: THE KITCHEN OPENS UP INTO THE LIVING AREA. THE FURNISHINGS ARE BRIGHT AND AIRY. THE KITCHEN GLEAMS IN SHADES OF WHITE. ERIKA BOUGHT THESE STAR-EMBOSSED GLASS HANGING LIGHTS AT A SHOP ON NANTUCKET, BEFORE THE HOUSE WAS EVEN BUILT. SUBWAY TILES ADORN THE WALLS BEHIND THE RANGE, AND THE COUNTER TOP IS CALLED QUARTZITE.>>IT LOOKS LIKE MARBLE, WHICH IS A LOOK I LIKE, BUT IT’S MUCH MORE FUNCTIONAL. IT IS NOT AS POROUS, AND IT’S LEATHERED, SO IT’S A BUMPIER TEXTURED FINISH. AUDREY: THE KITCHEN SPILLS INTO THE OUTSIDE LIVING AREA. IT IS LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF A MAGAZINE. HANDMADE FIREPLACE, CREATED WITH SHELLS, STONES, AND DRIFTWOOD THE TAYLOR FAMILY PICKED UP THEMSELVES. ERIKA HONORED TO PLAY A ROLE IN HELPING HER FAVORITE LOCAL THEATRE.>>THEY ARE SUCH AN IMPORTANT NONPROFIT IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND THEY PROVIDE SO MUCH TO THE FABRIC OF OUR COMMUNITY WITH THE MUSIC AND THE MOVIES. AND EVERYTHING THAT THEY HAVE, AND SO WE ARE REALLY HAPPY TO SUPPORT THE MUSIC HALL. AUDREY: FROM TRADITIONAL, TO A KITCHEN WITH A MODERN FLAIR. TRAVELING TO THE BARTON HOME, WE ARE GREETED BY THEIR ADORABLE GUARD DOG, WHO GRACIOUSLY ALLOWS US INSIDE, A LARGE SPACE FILLED WITH EYE-POPPING COLOR. THIS SPACIOUS KITCHEN HAS A WHITE WALL DECORATED WITH GRAY TREES ON ONE SIDE OF THE ROOM. A DOOR OPENS UP INTO A LARGE AND WELL-LAID-OUT PANTRY. THIS IS ALSO THE LAUNDRY ROOM. IT TOOK A FEW GUESSES TO FIGURE OUT JUST WHERE THE REFRIGERATOR IS LOCATED, UNTIL OWNER KIRSTEN BARTON LET US IN ON THAT SECRET. BLACK COUNTERTOPS CONTRAST WITH THE WOOD CORK FLOOR. WARM LIGHTS ABOVE THE KITCHEN ISLAND. LIGHT BLUE CABINETS FINISH OFF THIS UNIQUE SPACE. NEXT STOP ON THE TOUR, A MONTHS-LONG MAJOR RENOVATION LEAVES TATIANA AND BRINT SHONE WITH THEIR DREAM KITCHEN. FIRST, THEY HAD TO REMOVE A CHIMNEY THAT WAS IN THE CENTER OF WHERE THIS KITCHEN ISLAND NOW STANDS.>>THE CHIMNEY WAS RIGHT IN FRONT — ABOUT RIGHT WHERE THAT SINK WAS, AND SO THERE WAS A WALL HERE. WHERE WE WANTED TO GET TO WAS TO HAVE THIS ALL BE OPEN, BUT IT REQUIRED REMOVING THE CHIMNEY ALL THE WAY TO THE BASEMENT AND THEN GETTING THESE BEAMS ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO SUPPORT THE REST OF THE HOUSE. CERTAINLY HAVING THE SINK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE KITCHEN IS GREAT, BECAUSE NOW IF WE ARE DOING DISHES AND ENTERTAINING, YOU ARE THERE. YOU ARE ALWAYS GOING TO BE AT THE SINK AT SOME POINT, SO NOW WE ARE FACING EVERYBODY HERE. AUDREY: THE SPACIOUS AND BRIGHT KITCHEN IS LOCATED BETWEEN THE DINING ROOM AND THE LIVING AREA, TURNING WHAT WAS ONCE A GALLEY KITCHEN INTO A WARM SPACE, GEARED TOWARDS FAMILY TIME AS WELL AS ENTERTAINING. OUR FINAL STOP OF THE TOUR BRINGS US TO THIS NEWLY RENOVATED KITCHEN OF THE HACKETT HOME. A SMALLER VARIATION OF THE SUBWAY TILE ADORNS THE KITCHEN WALLS AND PROVIDE A CONTRAST TO THE DARK SOAPSTONE THAT COVERS THE COUNTERS AND ISLAND. PORTSMOUTH DESIGNER SCOTT PURSELL IS A SPONSOR OF THE KITCHEN TOUR. HE HELPED THEM ENVISION THEIR DREAM SPACE.>>SOME OF THE WALLS WEREN’T HERE. THEY HAD TO RIP OUT THE CEILING. THEY HAD TO SORT OF BUILD THESE LITTLE ALCOVES FOR THE BAR AND FOR THE APPLIANCES. YOU WANT TO SPACE TO FEEL IN SUCH A WAY THAT YOU LOVE IT. AUDREY: THE MUSIC HALL TOUR IS HELD MOTHER DAY’S WEEKEND EVERY YEAR. OVER THE PAST 25 YEARS, HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES HAVE OPENED UP THEIR HOMES TO HELP SUPPORT THE CULTURAL CENTER OF PORTSMOUTH.>>WE PICK NEIGHBORHOODS THAT ARE NOT ONLY GREAT PRODUCT WITH GREAT KITCHENS, BUT ALSO A REALLY GREAT AREA TO BE IN, WHETHER YOU ARE WALKING ALONG THE WATER OR DOWNTOWN PORTSMOUTH. OR ANYWHERE. IT IS JUST THE FULL PACKAGE, REALLY, FOR A GREAT WAY TO SPEND THE DAY.
