Why Choose Fashion Styling Over Fashion Design Career – Lulu Chen

Erik: As an artist, what informed your decision
to choose fashion styling over fashion design? Lulu When I was younger I loved fashion and
I didn’t know what part of fashion I really wanted to pursue, and then, you know, I definitely
learned about – I worked in PR; I worked in sales; I worked in advertising; and I just
always was drawn to magazines and doing stories and editorials. I guess what I love about
styling versus just being a designer is I get to play with all of the different designers’
clothes. I get to play with all of the different designers’ clothing, and, you know, for
me to do a whole world of different options. It’s a whole palette of silhouettes, colors,
designs, shapes, ideas. There’s so much great design out there and so many great designers
that that’s what I do. I get to play with all the different clothes and accessories. Erik: What have designers taught you about
being a more effective stylist? Lulu: I think to keep looking for inspiration.
I think they do an amazing job. They have to come up with – and now there are so many
collections each year. There are so many. It’s not just a few. And they’re constantly
producing new work, so that’s really inspirational just to keep producing new work, new thoughts,
you know, or even I guess expanding upon what’s already there, you know, inspired by vintage
things, but ultimately, I think they’re inspiring because they have to produce so
many different collections in a year, and it shows you how to be resilient.
